Archive for January, 2016

The nights started to draw in & the mornings were darker, it was such an effort to get up in the dark at 6.30am to go to the Fish & Chip shop in Slawit (Slaithwaite) to start another week & not get back to the boat until late Friday night.

We have been through so much turmoil whilst trying to run & build a business it is taking its toll, we have had 2 x 1 week holidays in nearly 4yrs & to be honest we are both knackered! Batteries get recharged Saturday to Monday when we can relax on the boat.

Not much severe cold or snow this winter but the awful floods of Boxing Day from Hebden Bridge down to Horbury from the River Calder have left their mark on the canals in this area & numerous boaters have lost either their homes or hobbies. Boats were lifted out of the water then dropped on the canal bank, bridges were smashed by runaway boats not to mention the local business & homes completely engulfed by the waters. The River Calder at Dewsbury rose by approx  5  metres & we at Saville Wharf were very very lucky that it didn’t break its banks as the marina would have been swamped too.

It was a wet winter for the fishermen too, not that they seemed to mind they were there every Saturday without fail! We bought an Army Surplus ammo box for the hot ashes.

We had a springling of snow during our few days off at Xmas, then in January the new we had been waiting on for such a long time, one of the couples we had shown around the shop had made a preliminary show of interest with the agents.

Everything was now crossed, we could get it sold, we could get the Roving Traders Licence, we could be Ccing by the spring…….
